Therapeutical effect of Captopril on severe hypertension
Bodaghi E, Honarmand MT

Abstract

This paper reports the effect of the new anti-hypertensive drug Captopril in 8 patients, aged 8 to 13 years, suffering from severe high arterial blood pressure. The patients consisted of one cases of each of the following diseases: Periarteritis nodosa, systemic lupus erythematosus, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, nephroangiosclerosis upon segmental and focal hyalinosis, extra-membranous glumerulonephritis in accompaniment of hepatitis B, advanced parenchymal nephropathy (Pyelonephritis? Segmental hypoplasia?), and 2 cases of obstructive nephropathy (Urolithiasis). They had arterial blood pressure of 150 to 220 mmHg systolic and 110 to 150 mmHg diastolic. As the high pressures did not respond to the conventional anti-hypertensive, Captopril was administrated. Thereupon the clinical symptoms of hypertension subsided and blood pressure normalized in a reasonable course of time. We could not observe the known side effects of the drug in any of our patients. Captopril acts anti-hypertensive by blocking activity of the converting enzyme which converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II.
