Portal obstruction: Report of two cases and review of literature
Abstract
Portal vein occlusion is the main cause of extra-hepatic portal hypertension (EHPH). In the present article the clinical manifestations of increased portal pressure in EHPH and in intra-hepatic portal hypertension (IHPH) are briefly mentioned and the validity and efficacy of different methods of medical treatment has been reviewed. Portal vein occlusion is particularly common in developing countries; neonatal dehydration and infections may be responsible. Assuming having the same situation in our country, the treatment of neonatal dehydration and infections whether septicemic or umbilical should be promptly undertaken and the umbilical catheterization for the purpose of intravenous treatment avoided. In addition to a short review of the literature two personal cases are reported.
