A survey of intestinal obstruction in neonates
Abstract
150 neonates were admitted in children's medical centers of Tabriz university of medical sciences in a period of 6 and half years. The cause of obstruction was mechanical extraluminal in 51.3%, mechanical intraluminal in 9.4%, and functional in 39.3% of the cases. 79.34% of the patients were hospitalized in their first week of life, in 64.7% of whom the obstruction was mechanical and in the remainder functional. 15.13% of the patients admitted due to functional obstruction had hirschsprung's disease. The rate of disease increased constantly in the following weeks of life. Male to female ratio was 64.66% to 35.34%. The commonest signs of obstruction at admission were vomiting, abdominal distension and constipation. The patients with o intraluminal obstruction showed the most mortality rate, whereas neonates with extraluminal obstruction had the most survival rate.
