Clinical findings in 80 infants with Bronchiolitis

Abstract


In a retrospective study of 80 patients admitted to Bahrami children's hospital during a 4-year period the following findings are obtained: Male infants are affected more commonly, 45.5% of cases occurred in spring, 55% are infants between 1 and 6 months of age. The patients suffered from dyspnea 100%, cough 94.8%, serous nasal discharge 69%, and vomiting 18%. Clinical examination revealed: Wheezing 88.7%, intercostals retractions 83.7%, fever 65%, pharyngitis 31.2%, conjunctivitis 7.5%. leucocytes in peripheral blood showed number below 12500 in 56.2% of cases, in 61.2% of cases the neutrophils were above 60%. Arterial blood gas analysis in 50 patients showed metabolic acidosis in 27.5% of cases, metabolic acidosis plus respiratory acidosis 15.5%, metabolic acidosis plus respiratory alkalosis 43.1%, respiratory alkalosis 8.6% and respiratory alkalosis 1.7%. no complications or mortality occurred in these 80 patients
