Talieh Zamam, MD; Parvin Abbaslou, MD

Abstract

Mercury vapor poisoning is a serious and potentially fatal problem. The mercury vapor may cause pneumonitis and death due to respiratory failure. Manifestations of mercury poisoning are respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological problems. All kinds of mercury can cause tissue damages, probably by destroying ribosomes and impairing protein synthesis.
In this article, we present a case of mercury poisoning with respiratory distress in an eight-month old male infant. Mercury was brought home by an individual who was not aware of the risk involved. The health hazards of heavy metals need to be reinforced to medical profession and the general public.
